February 28, 1984
The Class of 59 25-year Reunion Planning
Committee met February 28, 1984 to further discuss plans for their
reunion to be held June 29,30, and July 1.
Computer lists of classmates were passed out
to all present and request was made to attempt to find addresses for
those not listed or not current and report them back at the next
meeting.
Discussion was had as to where we would hold
the Saturday night dinner/dance; Ron Hirshburg will be contacted and
asked to see if Bradenton Yacht Club is available and what their charge
would be, etc. A report will be made at the next meeting. Other
alternatives discussed were: Crown House, Palm Aire County Club, Holiday
Inn on Longboat Key.
We discussed whether to have band or disc
jockey for Saturday night; decision was made to have band. Band
availability and cost will be reported back to the next meeting. Joan
MacDonald advised we could get a jukebox with 50’s music on it for
Friday night’s function, but would have to keep it covered outdoors.
Diane Leach will check on tents for that purpose. The cost of the
jukebox is $100 for the evening.
Discussion was had reference what fees to
charge for the reunion weekend.
It was decided that we would charge
$50/couple ($25 single) and could cover our
expenses with that amount. Should we fail to cover all expenses, Joan
MacDonald has some good ideas for fund raising at one of
the reunion functions.
Susan King brought in a promotional
“mug”; we decided to have the salesperson come to our next meeting
so we could decide what, if any, promotional items to purchase.
We have decided to ask former teachers who
are still in this area if they wish to attend and participate in the
reunion. A few names of those thought to be available are: Mr. Lee; Ms.
Bullock; Mr. Leeth; Ms. Parrish; Mr. Stewart; Mr. Mackie; Mr. Brumfield;
Mr. DeLay; Mr. Schork; Mr. Doyle; Mr. Mazzone; Mr. Dittman; Ms. Shamp;
Mr. Bucklin.
Lalla Eckert advised she has reserved the
park at 75th Street for our Sunday picnic and the county will require a
$10.00 deposit to hold same, although there is no real urgency in paying
the deposit at this time.
It is thought that we might want to award
“trophies” or something similar for certain categories. Those
suggested are: 1) most marriages; 2) married longest; 3) most children;
4) most grandchildren; 5) changed the least; 6) lost most hair; 7)
traveled longest distance.
Committees were formed as follows:
List, mailing; reservations -
Gary & Bobbi Schweinshaupt; Fran Clarke
Friday Night Function -
Sandra Rhodes; Diane Leach; Linda Gallen
Saturday Night Function -
Joan MacDonald; Fran Clarke; Patti Li
Sunday Picnic - Lalla
& Chuck Eckert; Terry McDonald; Patti Li
We will meet again March 6, 1984 at 7:30 p.m.

The Class of ‘59 Reunion
Committee met at 7:30 p.m. at the Manatee Eye Clinic. Present were:
Susan Taylor King, Chairperson; Bobbi Oblisk Schweinshaupt, Gary
Schweinshaupt, Terry McDonald, Joan Bedell MacDonald, Fran Feagles
Clarke, Jim Sellars, and David Clough.
A discussion was initiated by Joan MacDonald
as to which band we might want for Saturday night’s dinner/dance. She
presented us with several alternatives, one of which was local Manatee
High School graduate Harold Floyd’s band. It was decided that we would
ask Harold if he is available that evening and if he would play for the
$300 previously discussed. If available, it was decided that he would be
the band we would hire for the occasion. If not available, the Saturday
night committee will make the decision for some other band. Joan also
reported that she is having someone check on some pricing for the
booklets.
Joan MacDonald will check on donations for
door prizes; she will ask Pat Carpenter Teeter to help in this pursuit.
Susan Taylor King will check on trophies to
be given out for special categories as were agreed upon at the February
28th Committee Meeting. Added to the list of agreed upon categories is:
“Person with youngest child.”
David Henderson was suggested as an
excellent emcee, if available. Joan MacDonald will contact him, through
his cousin, Nancy Tyler, and report back at our next meeting.
David Clough will attempt to get some sort
of wooden platform to keep the jukebox off the ground for Friday
night’s function. He is to take it directly to Susan Taylor King’s
home for that purpose.
We discussed the addresses we have not been
able to obtain, as well as certain addresses that were not good and the
mailings returned by the post office. We are to work further toward
getting good, current addresses for those persons mentioned.
Next meeting will be held April 24, 1984
(Tuesday) at Manatee Eye Clinic on Manatee Avenue East at 7:30 p.m. All
sub-committees are to have reports of their accomplishments to present
to the full committee at that time.
